Healthcare and Religion

In today’s Huffington Post, CNN commentator and democrat Paul Begala wrote: “When David Obey swung that gavel — the same gavel used to hammer home Medicare — and struck it on that historic rostrum, it made a joyful noise unto the Lord. And I for one said Hallelujah.” Paul Begala can often be quite funny and witty, but even though that line made me giggle, he wasn’t being funny. Passage of the long-awaited healthcare reform bill made the man find religion! He’s probably religious anyway (I hear he’s anti-abortion) but this is the first time I’ve ever heard him mention the Lord in any commentary. I think I can relate.

Republicans certainly found new religion over the healthcare bill. The way they were going at it in the last few speeches before the inevitable happened, you would think they were about to fall down to the floor, writhing and speaking in tongues!

While all this gnashing of teeth over the end of American freedom as we know it was going on inside the halls of congress, the scared shitless right-winging American people were outside, going batshit over that black socialist/communist/fascist president in the White House who, by hook or by crook was planning to ruin their lives by directing insurance companies to stop with their pre-existing, policy-canceling, premium-hiking bullshit that is the root of so many reasons Americans go bankrupt in this country.

It was a frightening sight to behold. I felt like I was truly living a historic change, with all the ugliness that usually accompanies historic change. However, when I woke up this morning and read Paul Begala’s posting, even though this is unlike me, I too felt like making a joyful noise unto the Lord. Yee ha!
